What is Innovative Learning?

Schools across the nation have moved towards increasingly innovative approaches to teaching and learning. While differing in specific structures and strategies, these models promote comprehensive and holistic student development by employing a variety of strategies—including the use of new tools and practices—to make learning more personalized and focused on mastery of learning. These innovative approaches, which go by a variety of different names such as “blended,” “personalized,” “mastery-based,”and “next generation,” recognize the wide variety of strengths, interests, approaches, and challenges that young people bring to their learning experiences. In innovative learning environments, adults employ approaches of continuous, iterative, reflective, and data-informed learning to find creative ways to meet student needs so all young people can reach their full and unique potential.
Regardless of your specific innovative model, the quality of implementation matters most. See our framework outlining key supports needed for innovative learning.
